Humble ISD trustees approve new barbering courses for 2022-23 school year

Humble ISD high school students will have the opportunity to study barbering in the 2022-23 school year following trustees’ approval of two new courses at their April 12 meeting.

The additions of the Barbering 1 and Barbering 2 courses add to a bevy of career and technical education, or CTE, courses offered by the district aimed at providing students with hands-on experience in more than 40 programs of study before they graduate.

The district offers CTE courses pertaining to a number of industries, including animal science, wildlife and nature; automotive and architecture; audio-visual and graphic editing; computer technology and finance; culinary and service; criminal justice and health science; and science, technology, engineering and math coding.

HISD Superintendent Elizabeth Fagen touted the approval of the new courses.

“I’m very proud of this team,” Fagen said. “It’s been a whole lot of work ... and now we’re taking those sections and things that students want to take—what they would like to engage in next year—and creating that staffing that our campuses will need.”

Officials noted all new courses are reviewed each November by the HISD Secondary Course Selection Committee before being presented to trustees for final approval.
