The Glade Arts Foundation, a The Woodlands-based cultural nonprofit organization, announced in a news release and letter to the community April 6 that it is temporarily closing at its 2000 Woodlands Parkway location in The Woodlands due to leasing issues.

“It is with a heavy heart that we must inform you that The Glade Arts Foundation in The Woodlands is temporarily closed due to unforeseen circumstances with our lease agreement with the Howard Hughes Corporation,” the letter states. “Please know that we are doing everything in our power to resolve the situation and negotiate a new lease agreement that will allow us to continue to provide the cultural events and activities that have become a cherished part of the community.”

The Howard Hughes Corp. acknowledged the closure in a statement but did not detail the circumstances.

"We appreciate the Glade Arts Foundation for having brought their art gallery to The Woodlands," The Howard Hughes Corp. said. "It’s unfortunate that they couldn’t sustain their operation. The Howard Hughes Corporation is an active proponent of the arts and will continue to be strong in its advocacy."

According to previous Community Impact reporting, the nonprofit foundation, which was founded by Dragos Tapu in 2017, opened the Glade Cultural Center in April 2018 as a free fine arts museum that also offers performing arts and other events. Its Mercury Bar has operated Tuesdays through Sundays, according to the foundation website.

“We understand the impact that Glade Arts Foundation has had on the local arts scene, and we are committed to finding a solution that will allow us to reopen as soon as possible. Our team is working tirelessly to explore all possible avenues and come to a resolution that is in the best interests of both the Foundation and the community,” the organization said in the letter, which also encouraged its supporters to consider donations supporting its cultural events and activities when it reopens.
