Missouri City has proposed a 6% pay plan increase for firefighters to assist with retaining and recruiting qualified staff.

The overview

Missouri City City Council approved the first reading of the firefighter pay plan ordinance at an April 7 meeting to ensure the city salaries meet market standards.

The last pay increase for firefighters was approved by council last May.

A closer look

The new proposed ordinance will increase the pay plan for firefighters from $61,936 to $64,104, while firefighter specialists' pay will increase to $86,211, up from $83,296, per agenda documents.
The background

Missouri City completed a two-phase salary study in late 2022 and early 2023, which surveyed and analyzed salaries from various surrounding municipalities to determine options for increasing employee wages.

The study results showed the majority of Missouri City employee salaries were at the bottom, with firefighters at 8%-20% below the average, as previously reported by Community Impact.

What’s next

The second reading of the ordinance will be held at the April 21 meeting, per agenda documents. If approved, the agreement will go into effect May 4.
