The Woodlands Township will meet on Oct. 22 to discuss the development of a concept for an indoor recreation facility through a $231,600 feasibility study from Burditt Consultants, LLC. The funding will come from the township's parks needs assessment reserve, according to agenda materials.
Some background
During the fiscal year 2027 budget meetings held in August, the board discussed interest in a new indoor facility used for both recreation and athletic activities. The Bear Branch Sports Fields area and the Bear Branch Park area adjacent to the existing recreation center have been identified as potential locations, according to agenda information.
The facility could also serve as a space to help with township needs and a flexible indoor facility for programs, leagues, camps, events and other activities. After earlier discussions, the board allotted $600,000 for the feasibility process, and officials noted that additional studies may be needed in the future.
Community Impact previously reported that township staff also met with Conroe ISD to explore discussions for the potential for the school district’s athletic programs, including at College Park High School and The Woodlands High School, if the facility moves forward.
Potential uses of the facility discussed at previous meetings include soccer, football, lacrosse and other sports.
Other uses such as walking/jogging, fitness and wellness, multi-purpose spaces, spectator areas, and support amenities are also mentioned in meeting materials.
What to expect
According to agenda documents, the task order consists of three phases that won’t exceed $231,600.
The three phases include:
$92,000: Burditt will review township plans and stakeholder needs
$100,000: Burditt will develop up to three scenarios varying in size
$39,600: If the board approves one option, this phase will provide an operational and revenue analysis.
Other optional items that will be considered in the task order are to create a high-level concept to represent the model and 3D renderings for an additional $18,000.
Also of note
If the board approves the task order, the recommendation is to approve the budget amendment to fund the order this year, according to the agenda.
The board meeting will be in-person at 2801 Technology Forest Blvd., The Woodlands and livestreamed on the website at 6 p.m. here.
