ASK THE EDITOR: What local positions will be on the ballot in the upcoming May 5 election?


Candidates who hope to be on the May 5 ballot for the Sugar Land City Council or Fort Bend ISD board of trustees elections have until Feb. 16 to file.

In this issue, one of our cover stories takes a closer look at low voter turnout in Fort Bend County as well as how to register to vote. In the November 2017 election, only 6.76 percent of registered voters in the county turned up at the polls.

In Sugar Land, positions up for election include the mayor, which is currently held by Joe Zimmerman, as well as at large Positions 1 and 2, held by Himesh Gandhi and Mary Joyce, respectively. On the Fort Bend ISD board of trustees, positions 2 and 6, currently held by Grayle James and Addie Heyliger, respectively, are up for election.
