An ordinance to rename Orchard Street for a late county constable caused friction for Missouri City City Council on Monday. After Council and residents shared their opinions on the ordinance, council member Jerry Wyatt tagged the item for action at the next meeting. Ruben Davis died Oct. 18 and was a prominent figure in the Missouri City and Houston areas during his tenure as Fort Bend County Precinct 2 constable. Legislators, including state State Rep. Ron Reynolds, D-Missouri City, and U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee, D-Houston, were among those who publicly mourned Davis’ passing.   Reynolds attended Monday’s council meeting to give his support for renaming the street to Ruben Davis Drive.   Wyatt opposed the idea. He stated similar concerns during the resolution’s first reading Nov. 7. “Even though Ruben was all those things that everybody probably said, Ruben did not perform a service to Missouri City,” Wyatt said. “He may have performed a service to individuals, but he didn't enforce traffic or do anything like that in the city.” Wyatt said he wanted to see a street naming policy put in place first. He also said Davis had previously threatened to sue the city over a dispute regarding one of Davis’ campaigns for re-election. Wyatt did not say when the lawsuit was threatened. Some in attendance criticized Wyatt for his resistance. Residents, including Cynthia Bennett and Rosalind Cash, spoke in favor of the renaming, saying Davis had been helpful and well-liked in the community.
