In 2017, Macy’s Inc. will close 65 stores nationwide, with 8 locations in Texas affected, including the store at Greenspoint Mall, near Spring.
The move is considered a “reorganization of field structure that supports the remaining stores,” which will generate annual expense savings of about $550 million, according to a Macy’s news release distributed Jan. 4.
“Over the past year, we have been focused and disciplined about making strategic decisions to position us to gain market share and return to growth over time,” said Terry Lundgren, chairman and CEO of Macy’s. “While we are pleased with the strong performance of our highly developed online business … we continue to experience declining traffic in our stores where the majority of our business still transacted.”
Macy’s has a total of 730 stores. The closures are part of 100 closings that were announced in August 2016.
The Greenspoint Mall location opened in 1976 and employs 70 associates. Macy’s plans to close an additional 30 stores over the next several years, according to the news release.
“We are closing locations that are unproductive or no longer robust shopping destinations due to changes in the local retail shopping landscape as well as monetizing locations with highly valued real estate,” Lundgren said.
