By day, Paul and Hazel Resurreccion and Rick and Ren Perot are each busy with various careers: working in the oil and gas industry, running a martial arts school or being parents. But by night the husband-and-wife duos co-own Hybrid—An Ideal Fitness Center in Spring, which offers boot camps, weight-training and other types of fitness classes.
The Resurreccions first opened the gym as Hybrid Elite Fitness in August 2016 with a different couple. The Perots became co-owners last November after the original partners left, and they rebranded the gym to its current name. It held a grand opening early January.
The classes are scheduled Monday through Thursday evenings as well as mornings on Friday and Saturday. Three trainers, including Rick, teach the classes. Both Rick and Paul—who is a manager and does not train others— are veterans, and they said they use their military experience to foster a challenging yet friendly atmosphere.
“I think it’s kind of like that relationship you have with all your troops. We’ve built the same camaraderie here,” said Paul, who served in the U.S. Army from 1993-2007.
Rick, who served in the U.S. Navy from 2003-06, said he takes inspiration from his boot-camp days, but he focuses on keeping classes fun rather than military-style.
“The pushups [during boot camp]brought out the best part of me,” he said. “I’m trying to do the same thing here as well … to bring out the best in everybody but have a good time.”
The owners strive to create an inclusive environment for everyone regardless of athletic ability, Hazel said.
“There’s people like Rick that train every single day … and there’s people [like me],” she said. “We’re just moms. We’re just wives. We are people that work and just want to lead a healthy lifestyle.”
This year gym-goers can expect to see program changes at Hybrid—An Ideal Fitness Center, including more events such as ladies’ nights out and birthday parties, Ren said.
“We’re trying to get everyone back in the gym and build up our member base,” she said.
