David Nguyen

Experience: As a former student of Pearland ISD, a student advocate and a graduating college senior, I understand what it is like to sit in classrooms and walk the halls of the public education system of today. I recognize the current struggles that our students and teachers are experiencing on a day-to-day basis through these difficult times. With a student perspective, I aim to bring fresh ideas and student-centered decision-making to the board.

Why are you choosing to run for Pearland ISD board of trustees?

I want to give back to the community that has shaped my upbringing by transforming knowledge into results. My teachers have made such a huge difference in my life and made great sacrifices so that I could receive a quality education. They constantly challenged me to take risks, believe in myself and lead with integrity. I hope to help them continue to inspire the next generation of changemakers and problem solvers for our community.

If you are elected, what would be your top priorities?

Advocating for more fair and effective funding for every student and teacher; expanding more educational and civic opportunities fostering college [and] career readiness; ensuring inclusivity and acceptance of all students; promoting mental health awareness; expanding language accessibility; and having more open dialogue with students, teachers, and parents.

What do you feel is the biggest issue facing Pearland ISD?

Accountability. Pearland ISD deserves leadership that prioritizes students and teachers above any and all special interests. Rather than providing excuses, we need solutions with only the best interests of students, faculty and staff in mind. We need to shift the bottom line from one purely based on financial gain/profit to one that maximizes every student’s fullest potential. We need leadership that is approachable, personable, and reflective of the increasingly diverse community we serve.

Anything else you want potential voters to know?

My parents are Vietnamese refugees who sacrificed everything so that my brother and I could go to school, receive a proper education, and achieve our American dreams. Despite always being there for us, it was often difficult for them to feel included in our education due to the language barrier. I want to expand language accessibility to ensure that every parent can play an active role in their child’s education.

Experience: What qualifies me is my passion for all students in Pearland ISD to be successful. Success is defined in many ways, but for me, if our students are making progress towards being a better student, academic growth and mental health, then we are finding success for our students. Beyond that I have been a trustee for the past nine years, and I am a master trustee as trained by Texas Association of School Boards.

Why are you choosing to run for Pearland ISD board of trustees?

One word. Service. I am here to serve the students and employees of Pearland ISD. Service from a board member means support for students and staff.

If you are elected, what would be your top priorities?

My top priority remains to make Pearland ISD a destination school district for families and educators. We have the means and the resources to remain one of the top school districts, not only in the Houston area, but in the state of Texas.

What do you feel is the biggest issue facing Pearland ISD?

Schools all over the nation are facing a teacher crisis. Educators are leaving the vocation for multiple reasons: emotional stress, mental stress, financial reasons and a multitude of other reasons. So we share this with all school communities, and we are no exception. That takes me back to my previous point. We need to maintain Pearland ISD’s status as a desired place to attend and work.

Anything else you want potential voters to know?

If you see my signs around town, they clearly define who I am as a father, husband, community member and board member, quite simply: faith, family, community and teamwork.
