An $88.5 million bond package in the Alvin Community College taxing district was overwhelmingly rejected by voters Saturday night.

The bond package was defeated by a 69 percent to 31 percent margin. Unofficial results revealed 3,173 votes cast no ballots while 1,427 voters said yes to the measure.

ACC President Christal Albrecht said college officials were disappointed by the result.

"The voters have spoken and we will continue to do our best to provide quality education to all of our students," Albrecht said. "While we are disappointed with the results of the bond, we are looking forward to working with our newest members of the Board of Regents."

The $88.5 million bond was intended to fund a new campus in the western areas of the Alvin Community College district, which serves parts of Pearland and Manvel, as well as help pay for a new building on the Alvin campus which would house technical programs.

Leftover funds would have been utilized for assorted renovations and enhancements at the Alvin campus. All results are unofficial until canvassed.
