As COVID-19 cases continue to rise in the state of Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered the shutdown bars at noon June 26 and restricted restaurants to 50% capacity starting at 12:01 a.m. June 29. Cases have increased not just throughout the state—in Brazoria County, the largest number of daily cases since the virus was first recorded have occurred between June 23-25.

From May 3-9, at the beginning of reopening the state, the county was averaging 8.42 cases a day. From June 15-21, the county averaged 44.14 cases a day. New cases reported include both confirmed and probable cases, according to Brazoria County.

Most of the cases in Brazoria County are in Pearland. Nearly 45.55% of Brazoria County’s cases come from Pearland. The city also makes up 32.72% of Brazoria County’s total population, making it the most populous city in the county.

There are 266 confirmed cases and 413 recoveries in Pearland as of June 25, or roughly 2 cases per 1,000 residents and 3 recoveries per 1,000 residents.

On June 25, the city of Pearland passed an ordinance requiring a mask in all places of business. While Brazoria County has not required anyone to wear a mask, the county’s social media account recommends social distancing and wearing a mask.

The majority of the cases in Brazoria County are people aged 30-39 and 40-49. Slightly fewer cases are those ages 20-29. All of the COVID-19-related deaths in Brazoria County have been those 50 years or older.
