Caitlin Farias and Hannah Watson have rules for running their business: One is that a piece of clothing must make it to the Luxie Plum floor before they buy it themselves. Another is that each sister can order pieces for the store that the other sister dislikes.

“We buy the things that we like, and then we hope that everyone else likes it too,” Farias said. “She and I have tastes that just overlap enough … but it’s just different enough to give us a good variation.”

While Farias and Watson may have different tastes—Watson is more interested in well-made basics and bohemian style, while Farias is a risk-taker and quick to adapt to trends—both sisters love boutique shopping, which led them to open Luxie Plum in 2017.

Located at 632 S. Friendswood Drive, Friendswood, the boutique sells clothing, jewelry, accessories and gift items, such as candles and bath bombs.

Owning a boutique as sisters presents challenges. According to both Watson and Farias, the good days are really good, and the bad days are really bad.

“It’s not for the faint of heart,” Farias said.

However, the sisters love owning the store together.

“We’ve gotten a lot closer,” Farias said.

The sisters built their brand at trade shows, with their first about three years ago at the Golfcrest Country Club’s Holiday Market. The show was so successful the sisters had to commission friends to help keep up with the demand.

“It was like a sea of Luxie Plum bags; almost every woman at that show had the bag in her hand,” Watson said.

Since opening the business the sisters have learned a lot, particularly about what customers want, Watson said. They are hoping to expand in the near future, most likely to the Bay Area.

“Whether that means it is the Luxie Plum that everyone knows now and this same kind of concept or a totally new Luxie Plum concept, we do have plans to open a second Luxie Plum location,” Farias said.
