Humble and New Caney ISDs are moving forward with projects from their bond programs after NCISD sold $60 million worth of bonds and HISD sold $125 million worth of bonds in July.
The bond funds are part of HISD’s $575 million bond program and NCISD’s $200 million bond program, both of which voters approved in May.
HISD is using the district’s first bond sale to begin funding numerous projects, including relocating the district’s northern agricultural barn—because the existing site is prone to flooding—and building a north transportation center to accommodate future growth in the district and decrease the number of miles buses have to travel.
At its Aug. 14 meeting, the HISD board of trustees passed a resolution authorizing the district to move forward with purchasing 11.6 acres of land for the transportation center and 6.9 acres of land for the agriculture barn on Ford Road in Porter.
In addition to these projects, HISD is using $4.88 million of the initial bond funds to install turf fields at all of its high schools and $3.18 million to replace the air conditioning at Atascocita High School and Kingwood Park High School’s natatorium, according to the meeting agenda.
“The district had to replace Kingwood High School’s field this summer because it was destroyed by flooding,” HISD Public Communications Director Jamie Mount said. “To save money, the district chose to do all the turf at once.”
NCISD officials are using some of the district’s initial bond funding to design the expansion of Woodridge Forest Middle School as well as a middle school to replace Keefer Crossing Middle School, which is set to open in August 2021, NCISD Director of Public Relations Scott Powers said.
