Two candidates are running for U.S. House District 22 in the upcoming Nov. 5 election.

Democratic candidate Marquette Greene-Scott is challenging Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Troy Nehls, R-Richmond, who first won the seat in 2022.

Candidates were asked to limit their answers to 50 words and asked to address the question and not attack other candidates. Answers may have been cut or edited to adhere to those guidelines, or for style and clarity.

Marquette Greene-Scott

Experience: Mayor pro tem, city councilwoman, attorney, former educator, decision maker and driver of economic growth

Occupation: Attorney

Contact Information: 832-713-6308

Why are you running for this position?

I decided to run for Congress because it is time to return to handling the people’s business. Congress has become too partisan. As a councilwoman, I have the experience of voting on issues in a nonpartisan manner. I decided now is the time because we are losing our rights.

What would be your top priority if elected?

My top priority is reinstating women’s reproductive rights. Access to reproductive care is a human right. We must ensure access to reproductive health care services which include contraception, prenatal care and safe abortions. Reproductive rights are about bodily autonomy. We as women must be in control of our own bodies.

What are the biggest challenges for the residents in your district, and how will you address them?

I think reproductive rights, voting rights, immigration reform, health care, jobs and the economy, the environment and education are the biggest issues facing residents in District 22. I would work to codify Roe v. Wade, pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and pass a bipartisanship immigration bill to start.

What are ways you would make sure your constituents have access to health care they need?

I would build upon the benefits of the Affordable Care Act by providing more funding for premiums, expanding Medicaid to reach more working-class adults and lowering prescription drug costs.

What are your priorities regarding the nation’s immigration policy?

Immigration reform centers on finding a balanced and comprehensive approach to addressing various aspects of the immigration system. There must be a complete overhaul of the system. This includes strengthening border security, modernizing border infrastructure and granting pathways to citizenship of undocumented immigrants already living here and asylum seekers.

How will you build working relationships across district and party lines?

My nonpartisan experience lends way to bipartisanship. I will work with anyone who is willing to work and do what is best for my district and our country. Bipartisanship is essential to a functioning government.
