Katy ISD’s student enrollment has grown by over 14,870 students, or 18.6%, in the past five years—more than any other school district in the Houston area over that time period, demographers said.

The overview

A demographic study was presented by demographic firm Population and Survey Analysts at the KISD board of trustees’ Nov. 18 work study meeting.

Lamar Consolidated ISD ranked behind KISD with the second-most student growth between the 2018-19 and 2023-24 school years. LCISD still has 3,800 fewer students compared to KISD’s growth, PASA data shows.
Quote of note

“You’ve got this huge amount of growth in the northwest, and then you see the southwest ... not regenerating as fast, so I think at some point ... there’s some room to have some real discussions about attendance boundary modifications, not necessarily throughout the district but in some big areas,” KISD Chief Operations Officer Ted Vierling said at the meeting.

By the numbers

For the 2024-25 school year, there are nearly 102,300 students who live in the district, but nearly 6,250 school-age children in KISD’s boundary attended charter or private schools, and over 1,070 other students attended a different school district or virtual academies, PASA data shows.

This brought the total number of students residing within and attending KISD to about 94,970 students, with over 980 students transferring into the district, bringing the total number of students to over just 95,950, according to PASA data.

PASA Planning Director Kris Pool noted charter schools are bound to take residing students from the district, as there has been about a 43% statewide increase in charter school enrollment since 2017, and about a 70% increase in students who reside in KISD transferring to charter schools since 2017, PASA data shows.
What else?

The following single-family subdivisions, located in the northern part of the district, are projected to have the largest impact on KISD’s enrollment over the next decade:
  • Grange: 2,935 projected units
  • Anniston: 2,330 projected units
  • Elyson: 2,310 projected units
  • Sunterra: 2,309 projected units
  • Bridgeland: 1,750 projected units

Additionally, an increase of over 20% of students over the next decade are projected to enroll in KISD from new multifamily and rental housing, PASA data shows.

Nearly 17,050 new multifamily occupancies and nearly 800 single-family build-to-rent occupancies are projected to join KISD, according to PASA data.
