Magnolia ISD launched a campaign this week to adopt Little Cypress-Mauriceville CISD, located in Orange County, to financially support the school district as it recovers from Hurricane Harvey flooding.

Out of six schools in LCMCISD, only two are habitable, officials said. Several students and families in the area also lost their homes.

According to the Texas Education Agency’s 2016 district detail snapshot, LCMCISD has a total of 3,369 students, which is 26 percent of MISD’s total student population. MISD Superintendent Todd Stephens presented the idea to Superintendent Pauline Hargrove and her staff at LCMCISD.

“We are blessed as a district and our community has been so supportive of helping some of our teachers and staff get back on their feet after Harvey,” Stephens said. “Now it is our turn to support a district that has a long recovery process ahead of them this year. We prepare our students to be responsible, civic-minded community members and this is another example of how we model service above self to our students and the community.”

LCMCISD students resumed school Sept. 20 at alternative locations including North Orange Baptist Church and the two campuses that were not damaged. MISD plans to raise funds so district administration can replace destroyed band instruments, athletic uniforms and other supplies, officials said.

Additionally, the Magnolia Rotary Club hosts its Magnolia Bowl football game Friday, Oct. 20, at Magnolia High School, where all proceeds will benefit the adopted school district. MISD will present its donations to LCMCISD at the event.
