Transportation study, calendar and bilingual programs on upcoming Katy ISD agenda, Feb. 19

Katy ISD leaders are expected to discuss the district’s recent transportation survey, the 2018-19 school year calendar and the future of bilingual programs at Fielder Elementary School during their Monday board of trustees work study.

All three issues have received feedback from community members in recent months. The district conducted a public survey on school bus routes and start times in January, as well as a survey on school calendar options in January and early February.

KISD faces a bus driver shortage and a growing population, which could lead to a stricter residential eligibility requirement for bus transportation or a move from two to three class start times districtwide.

District spokesperson Maria DiPetta said an update on the survey results is expected Monday. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. in the newly renovated Education Support Complex at 6301 S. Stadium Lane, Katy, which was under repair since taking on water during Tropical Storm Harvey.

As for Fielder’s bilingual programs, Superintendent Lance Hindt has previously said the district is trying to solve the school’s overcrowding and may have to relocate some programs as a result. Parents of children in Fielder’s two-way immersion program have spoken at multiple board meetings to oppose moving the program, but Hindt has not yet confirmed what programs KISD expects to relocate.

Renovations to the school, as part of KISD’s 2017 bond package, are also on the meeting agenda, along with construction proposals for the planned Junior High School No. 16 and High School No. 9.

Trustees are also expected to discuss forming a committee to name the future Elementary School No. 41. The full agenda is available on KISD’s website.
