Telecommunicators will now be allowed to have up to six days of mental leave following traumatic events after Montgomery County approved the change during its Sep. 12. meeting.

How we got here

The Texas Legislature passed House Bill 1486 during the 2023 session, allowing telecommunication staff to be included under law enforcement for mental health leave.

Previously, telecommunication staff and dispatchers were not included under the provision, which allowed for six mental health days following exposure to a traumatic event.

What it means

All law enforcement personnel, certified peace officers and telecommunication staff in Montgomery County will be granted up to six days of paid mental health leave per traumatic event.
