Officials with the nonprofit organization United Way of Greater Houston announced Sept. 21 that CEO Amanda McMillian will retire as president and chief executive officer on May 1, 2027. The board unanimously selected Angel Harris, current vice president and chief advancement officer, to succeed her.
According to the news release, Harris will assume the president and CEO role effective immediately, while McMillian will remain in her role through the 9-month transition.

McMillian joined the United Way of Greater Houston's executive team in 2020. During her tenure, she helped establish the Greater Houston Disaster Alliance, a formal research-practice partnership with the Kinder Institute for Urban Research and forged new community partnerships, according to the release.
“Amanda’s leadership has strengthened United Way of Greater Houston and expanded its impact across our community, and we are deeply grateful for all she has accomplished,” said board chair Eric Tanzberger. "We are excited to welcome Angel as our next president and CEO. Her leadership, experience and commitment to our mission position United Way for an exciting next chapter of impact.”

Harris joined the nonprofit organization in 2021, bringing 30 years of nonprofit experience. In the last five years in Houston, Harris has:
led organizational efforts for United Way's Building Possibilities Campaign, which raised more than $30 million for upgrading infrastructure and technology
helped the organization rebrand its marketing and communications initiatives
developed an 8-year revenue growth plan to generate over $580 million by 2031
As chief advancement officer, Harris was in charge of leading United Way's fundraising, marketing, events and volunteer engagement efforts.

A search for United Way's next chief advancement officer to replace Harris is currently underway, nonprofit officials said.
