Every year, the Texas Legislature sets the dates for an annual sales tax holiday on school supplies and clothing. This year’s sales tax holiday is Aug. 11-13.

Most clothing, footwear, school supplies and backpacks priced at less than $100 are exempt from sales tax this weekend, according to the office of the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, which oversees sales tax collection in the state. This exemption saves shoppers about $8 for every $100 they spend. The sales tax exemption applies to each item priced at less than $100. Items priced at $100 or more pay the full amount of sales tax, according to the state comptroller’s website.

The holiday extends to layaway plans and items sold online, by phone or by mail order.
