Baker Botts, a Houston-headquartered law firm focused on international energy, technology and life sciences, has signed on with The Ion technology hub as a founding partner, according to March 16 announcement. The firm joins previously announced partners Microsoft and Chevron Technology Ventures.

Baker Botts, which has supported The Ion since its inception and has provided programming over the last few years, will be on-site frequently when The Ion opens its 266,000-square-foot, mixed-use structure later this year.

Baker Botts will provide in-kind services to 2021’s Houston Startup Showcase Winner, which is set for March 24. In addition, the firm's on-site presence will allow it to provide support to various community members; offer substantive programming to startups; host legal programming and workshops for The Ion’s Accelerator Hub members; and expand gateway events, including The Ion’s Family Tech Night and Plaza Tec series.

“Today’s announcement not only solidifies Baker Botts’ investment in The Ion and the programs we are activating, but is a commitment to growing Houston’s innovation ecosystem,” said Jan E. Odegard, interim executive director of The Ion, in a news release. “Baker Botts’ work with The Ion has already helped countless entrepreneurs get their work off the ground, and we are excited for their support as we continue to accelerate innovation and connect communities to build sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Houston.”

Baker Botts will work inside The Ion, which will serve as an anchor to a 16-acre innovation district currently under development in Midtown Houston.
