One of League City’s water facilities will soon double in capacity and will eventually triple to the meet growing demand from incoming development.

What you need to know

On Aug. 8, League City City Council approved a $6.01 million contract with consultant Freese and Nichols to design and bid out the expansion of the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility.

The goal is to increase the facility’s capacity from what was originally 4 million gallons per day to 8 million gallons per day.

Executive director of capital projects Ron Bavarian said the city’s west side is growing. Some of the units in the facility have extra capacity, and the facility, which was built a decade ago, has already been rerated to handle 5.4 million gallons per day.

A closer look

Council Member Andy Mann asked how close the increase to 8 million gallons would get the city to build-out. Right now, the city is just over halfway built out.

City Manager John Baumgartner said in about another decade or so, the facility’s capacity would be further increased to 12 million gallons per day to further serve expected growth.
