More requirements related to artificial intelligence are making their way into school code at Clear Creek ISD after the board of trustees approved revisions to a pair of policies at its April 14 meeting.

What’s happening?

The first policy revision approved, titled CQ (LOCAL) for technology resources, adds a section for AI, noting that employees and students are allowed to explore and implement AI, as long as it’s a support tool to “enhance student outcomes and shall never take the place of teacher and student decision-making.”

The district’s new revision also notes that students are only allowed to use AI with a teacher’s permission. If students use AI to harm, bully or harass others, they will be disciplined under the student code of conduct, the policy reads.

What else?

The second revised policy falls under the academic dishonesty portion in the academic achievement and grading or progress report for parents policy, also titled EIA (LOCAL).

This revision adds that the use of AI to complete an assignment in part or whole unless approved by the teacher is considered academic dishonesty.

CCISD’s last revision made to this policy was a clause at the end of a sentence regarding how a determination was made that a student engaged in academic dishonesty.

It notes evidence that academic dishonesty was committed “may include, but is not limited to, written materials, observations or other credible information from students or others, or the use of an artificial intelligence detection tool selected by the district.”
