In a nutshell
According to district documents, some of what the district’s new compensation plan calls for includes:
- A 1% increase to the teacher salary schedule and a $600 increase to the minimum salary, raising it to $60,600
- A 1% increase for all professional and administrative staff
- A 2% salary increase for nonexempt personnel
- Market adjustments for other employees
What else?
With a vote to come in August, CCISD officials will also consider a public hearing date for the district’s tax rate and budget.
The day pitched in the agenda is for Aug. 21, which is the last possible day for the district to call for a voter-approved tax rate election, also known as a VATRE.
A VATRE would be called if the district were to approve a tax rate beyond the threshold set by the state and must be called by Aug. 21, according to the Texas secretary of state website.
Without a VATRE, the district is projecting a $12.4 million shortfall in its budget this year, according to district documents. A VATRE could potentially add $17.4 million to the district’s budget.
If the VATRE were to pass, it would not result in an increase to the tax rate, which last year sat at $1.1146 per $100 valuation of a resident’s home. The district's maintenance and operation rate, which covers its day-to-day operations, made up $0.8446 of that total.
This year’s maintenance and operation rate is expected to come in just under that at $0.8445, according to district documents.
CCISD has one of the lowest tax rates compared to similar-size districts in the region.
