Grapevine City Council unanimously voted to keep the Convention and Visitors Bureau as the title sponsor of the Texas Women's Open for five more years at its Aug. 18 meeting.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau became the title sponsor of the event in 2024 when the golf tournament was renamed to the Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open and moved to the Grapevine Golf Course.
The cost
The city paid $75,000 annually for the first three years of the deal to remain the title sponsor for the event, a total of $225,000, according to the original agreement.
Over the next five years, the sponsorship fees will increase annually, according to city documents, to:
- $80,000 in 2027
- $82,500 in 2028
- $85,000 in 2029
- $87,500 in 2030
- $90,000 in 2031
Funding will come from the Convention and Visitors Bureau's incentives fund.
Paul W. McCallum, executive director of the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau, presented a review of how the tournament has grown and benefited the city by bringing media publicity and visitors to local hotels, restaurants and stores.
The breakdown
Besides the additional visitors and the public relations value of related exposure as the title sponsor, the city will receive specific sponsor benefits, according to the agreement.
In 2027, the Convention and Visitors Bureau will receive five teams, or 15 spots, in the tournament's pro-am and each team will be paired with a professional golfer competing in the tournament. An additional team will be added yearly and nine will be available in 2031.
The city has filled these teams with meeting planners from around the country who look at local hotels while in Grapevine, and it has led to good corporate meeting opportunities, McCallum said.
The Northern Texas Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America, the tournament organizer, will also award an annual $5,000 Destination Grapevine Texas Women’s Open college scholarship to a junior tour member, giving preference to a Grapevine-Colleyville ISD senior.
If there is not an eligible GCISD senior, the scholarship may be awarded to another Northern Texas PGA junior tour member, with preference given to those from the Grapevine area.
The sponsorship agreement outlines other benefits as well, including affiliation with the All-American Tour.
Notable quote
Northern Texas PGA CEO Mark Harrison spoke to the council about the meaningful relationship between the city and the tournament.
“We feel like we have found a true home for the tournament right here in Grapevine.” Harrison said. “We look forward to bringing the Texas Women's Open to Grapevine Golf Course for many years to come.”
Looking ahead
In 2024, the tournament had golfers from 12 countries and 15 states, and in 2026 grew to include players from 19 countries and 28 states.
McCallum said he expects the tournament to continue growing and providing tourism benefits to the city and golf course during the next five years of the partnership.
The 2027 dates for the professional and competitive amateur tournament are planned for June 2-4, with a pro-am day scheduled for June 1. All tournaments for the next five years will have a minimum purse goal of $100,000, according to the document.
