The Katy Family YMCA is working toward its fundraising goal to be able to start construction on a new location.

“We’ve raised $1.27 million since late summer,” said Brian Haines, the district vice president of operations for the YMCA of Greater Houston.

As of September, the YMCA had raised $1.1 million toward the estimated $12 million cost of the facility. Haines said the fundraising goal is $2.4 million, or 20 percent of the total cost of the project.

“We’re trying to reach a benchmark for fundraising to start the construction,” Haines said.

Plans for the new building have been submitted to the city of Katy.

The two-story YMCA is planned for 41,000 square feet, and Haines said within three years, it would serve an estimated 30,000 people through its programs and services.

The new YMCA would help alleviate crowding at the existing Katy Family YMCA, located at 22807 Westheimer Parkway, which has undergone renovations and additions to expand its capacity. It was built in 2001 and serves about 50,000 people. Haines said the building has been expanded twice.

Amenities for the new YMCA include an outdoor jogging trail, an outdoor swimming pool, weights and cardio equipment, group exercise rooms, a personal training room and a child watch wing.

YMCA members will have the option to transfer their membership when the facility opens.

The new YMCA will be located south of I-10 in the Katy Main Street development west of Pin Oak Road.
