The overview
The Fulshear Senior Citizen Center was born when resident Jim Mazzone approached city staff this fall with an idea to create a hub where seniors can gather and connect.
Mazzone's efforts have resulted in the new center becoming a reality. Efforts to establish a permanent facility are being looked at. In the meantime, it will temporarily be housed at the former Justice of the Peace building, located at 8102 FM 359, Fulshear, until a dedicated, permanent facility can be established, Fulshear Mayor Don McCoy said in an email.
“This center will be more than just a space; it will be a resource for building connections, encouraging active lifestyles and addressing the unique needs of our seniors,” he said.
Most services at the center will be free for seniors through the support of the county, city, grants and community donations, McCoy said, although there may be some minimal fees for specialized programs or classes.
A closer look
The center will bridge the gap of new and existing senior services such as meal delivery services, wellness checks and faith-based social groups, which are currently carried out at other locations, and serve as a central hub for resources, McCoy said.
New resources at the center will include:
- Social activities
- Health and wellness programs
- Educational workshops
- Hobby groups
- Meal services
Notable quote
“As one of the fastest-growing cities in the nation, Fulshear is home to a significant and increasing senior population,” McCoy said. “A senior center is vital for fostering social connections, combating isolation and providing essential services that enhance the quality of life for our senior residents. It reflects our commitment to ensuring all members of our community have the resources they need to thrive.”
What’s next
The center is expected to open by mid-February, McCoy said.
