With freezing temperatures expected to hit the Dallas-Fort Worth area this weekend, Denton ISD school schedules may be affected by the cold weather.
Update: Jan. 23, 3:08 p.m.
DISD officials canceled all after-school and weekend activities from Jan. 23-25 due to inclement weather, according to a district communication.
Coaches and activity directors for the after-school and weekend programs will contact the students’ families with more details for possible rescheduling, according to the communication.
What you need to know
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch from Jan. 23-25, and an extreme cold watch is in place for Denton County from Jan. 24-26, with temperatures forecast to drop to 7 degrees by early morning Jan. 26. The forecast also shows freezing rain and sleet over the weekend.
"We are staying in regular communication with local officials and weather services as we carefully assess conditions and any potential impact to school operations," the district stated on its Instagram page.
DISD’s inclement weather webpage states that in the event of possible weather-related closures, district leaders aim to make a closure decision by 6 a.m.
School closures will be reported through:
Also of note
The webpage lists recommendations for parents to make sure their child’s school has accurate contact information to receive communication.
If no cancellations are reported, school and school activities will resume as scheduled.
District officials do not currently know if a cancellation will require a make-up day, DISD Chief Communications and Marketing Officer Nick Petito said. Make-up days are dependent on how long school is out of session due to inclement weather.
The district has more school days on its calendar than required by the state and has banked minutes in its instructional calendar for some missed days, Petitio said.
