Officials from Children’s Health and UT Southwestern announced plans to build a new $5 billion multitower campus in Dallas’ Southwestern Medical District.

The big picture

The new campus will have two 12-story towers and an eight-story tower totaling about 2 million square feet of space near the intersection of Harry Hines Boulevard and Mockingbird Lane, according to a Feb. 7 news release. The new campus will expand inpatient, surgical and ambulatory capacity while also serving as a joint hub for innovation, academic research and training.

“For more than 110 years, Children’s Health has served the children of North Texas, adapting and growing with the needs of our community,” said Christopher Durovich, Children’s Health president and CEO, in a statement. “This new pediatric campus, a joint investment with UT Southwestern, enhances our shared capacity to provide comprehensive care for children, including those with the most complex medical and surgical needs.”

Officials expect the campus to open in six or seven years, according to the news release.

By the numbers

The new campus will include:
  • 552 beds
  • Two helicopter pads
  • A Level 1 pediatric trauma center
  • 90 emergency room exam rooms
  • 24 observation rooms
  • A fetal care center
  • 96 outpatient exam rooms
Why it matters

Health care demand continues to grow in Dallas-Fort Worth as the region’s population continues to increase. Almost 2.5 million kids live in the region, according to the news release. That number is expected to surpass 3 million by 2032 and double by 2050.

Growth has been driven by population booms in surrounding cities, such as Frisco and McKinney. By 2025, the DFW region will be home to an estimated 8.5 million people, according to the news release.
