One of Richardson ISD’s two new middle schools, Lake Highlands Middle School, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony this month.

The ceremony was held at the new school Sept. 5 and included remarks from district officials. Lake Highlands Middle School, located at 10301 Walnut Hill Lane in Dallas, is RISD’s first purpose-built middle school.

What you need to know

Students first walked in the school’s doors Aug. 13, which was RISD’s first day of school. District officials approved over $81 million to construct new facilities for Lake Highlands Middle School.

The campus is part of a larger shift to a middle school model within RISD that will group sixth- through eighth-grade students in the same building, instead of the sixth graders at elementary schools and seventh- and eighth-graders at junior high schools.

What’s next?

District officials plan to transition RISD’s remaining six junior high schools to middle schools concurrently. Funding could come from a potential bond election.
