Branum’s presentation included the district improvement plan, campus improvement plans and updated board goals. All three of these plans are scheduled to be updated in the 2022-23 school year.
According to district officials, Texas House Bill 3 requires school boards to adopt detailed plans for student performance goals in third grade reading and third grade math as well as college, career and military readiness. RISD staff provided the board with data regarding the learning gap caused by the pandemic and recommended updates based on this trend to inform current board goals.
One of the major goals of the district improvement plan is to ensure diversity. Branum said RISD is hoping to use programs and learning opportunities so that the district meets the unique needs of all students.
"RISD is the fifth most diverse school district in Texas, and every one of our campuses has its own specific needs,” Branum said. “We know we must provide differentiated support at each campus, and we believe our performance objectives directly align with the board goals as well as our strategic plan.”
An updated district improvement plan will help shape the campus improvement planning process that is designed to support resources at each campus in the district, according to RISD officials.
Proposed district improvement plan goals include guaranteeing that all students will perform at or above grade level; recruiting, retaining and rewarding teachers and staff; actively pursuing creative funding sources; responsibly managing current resources; and ensuring that district facilities and infrastructure adapt over time.
The board is scheduled to adopt the new 2022-23 board goals, the district improvement plan and campus improvement plans during it Oct. 13 regular meeting.
