What you need to know
At a July 22 council work session, Prosper Town Council members heard a presentation about Zipline, a drone delivery service partnering with Walmart to expand grocery delivery in the Dallas-Fort Worth Area.
David Hoover, director of development services for Prosper, said Zipline representatives approached Prosper town officials earlier this year to discuss their services.
“We’ve been working on an amendment to our existing [drone] ordinance, and basically we’ve [narrowed] this down to where the place we could do it is Walmart, so we can try it and see if we like it,” Hoover said.
The details
Hoover said the proposed site for the service is the Walmart Supercenter at the Gates of Prosper.
The drones can travel up to 70 mph, deliver within a 10-mile radius and carry up to eight pounds of select groceries, according to city documents.
Additionally, the drones cannot deliver certain items, including alcohol and medication.
Looking ahead
No ordinance changes have been brought forward yet, but staff is drafting an amendment to allow for a test program of the drones.
