January: Terramania brings earthy decor to Celina
Traci Miller, owner of Terramania, said the name of her shop means “crazy about things from the earth.”
Miller said Terramania offers home decor with Scandinavian influences. Miller said she finds her merchandise—candles, pillows, rugs and more—from several North Texas markets. However, she also works with several vendors that bring items from overseas to sell in her store.
“I wanted people to feel like they were walking into my home,” Miller said. “So all the earthy tones, the layering, the textures—it just gives you that cozy, warm feeling.”
February: Shades of Green offers native plants, knowledge to Frisco, Celina gardeners
Shades of Green Marketing Manager Tim Wardell said staff want people to succeed at gardening and understand that it’s not easy.
“We’ve made all the mistakes,” Wardell said. “We will help you in any way that we can because once you figure it out, it’s a lot of fun.”
Shades of Green employees are passionate about plants and gardening, Wardell said.
“They want to work in the plant industry,” Wardell said. “We have a very knowledgeable staff, and probably within the last year, we’ve had the most knowledgeable staff I’ve ever worked with.”
May: Famous in Oregon offers plants and gardening tips in Prosper
There is no such thing as a green thumb, Famous in Oregon owners Erika and Tanner Mitchell said. They said gardening is a hobby for everyone.
The store, located in downtown Prosper, sells plants, planters and gardening supplies, but it started out of the couple’s home.
Tanner Mitchell started gardening in 2017, Erika Mitchell said, adding that he couldn’t believe there are so many differing opinions on how to care for them.
“He started bringing in different plants and started posting what he learned about them on social media,” Erika Mitchell said. “And people were there for it.”
June: Burn Boot Camp owner strives to build community among members
Burn Boot Camp owner Deepal Patel said the gym makes its members do hard things in the gym so they can do the harder things in life.
“I always say 'what you do in the gym is actually a lot easier than what you do outside of the gym,'" Patel said.
She previously worked as a litigation paralegal but became interested in opening Burn Boot Camp after attending classes. She took the concept to her husband, Moe Patel, who agreed.
July: Prosper-based Daystar Landscape offers design, installation options
Daystar Landscapes General Manager Catherine Brooks said there are several aspects a homeowner should consider when deciding to landscape their yards, and Daystar staff is there to make the process as easy as possible.
Daystar Landscapes was founded in 1984 by Jeff Canfield after he moved to North Texas from Oklahoma.
“He was looking for ways to make an income and in landscaping, at that time, you didn’t have to have a license or a permit,” Brooks said. “So he started a small landscaping business.”
September: Sylvan Learning teaches students more than study skills in Prosper, Celina
The most important thing a person can have is an education, Sylvan Learning of Celina owner Shanna Miller said.
“[Education] is one of the best things we can give to our own children and the kids of the community,” Miller said.
Sylvan Learning of Prosper owner Janet Roy said education builds expertise, which increases confidence.
October: Inappropriate Trucker Hats offers customizable head wear in Prosper
A passion for music and sense of humor led Bekah Hardick to open Prosper-based Inappropriate Truck Hat.
Originally, Hardick sold under the name Uncle Bekah’s Hats. She later changed the name after creating a sign for an event reading “Inappropriate trucker hats sold here” and decided that Inappropriate Trucker Hats would draw more attention to her business.
The business, which first opened in 2017, sells “Inappropriate trucker hats” as the name implies, Hardick said. The business has over 600 sayings and slogans printed on their hats.
November: Hey Sugar Candy Store offers sweet treats, more in Celina
Hey Sugar is more than just a small town candy shop, Manager Maggie Evans said.
Evans said Hey Sugar offers a welcoming environment with details that are well thought-through.
“Being here in Celina ... we all kind of know each other even though it's expanding so fast,” Evans said. “Anytime people stop in here, they almost always run into someone they know.
