The Plano ISD board of trustees agreed to pay hourly employees who were unable to go to work when the district shut down for three days in February due to severe winter weather.

PISD closed all schools and facilities Feb. 3-4 and Feb. 24. During their April 5 meeting, trustees unanimously approved a resolution to pay non-exempt employees who were prevented from working because of the inclement weather closures.

"Exempt employees, or professional employees, by nature of their contract are paid regardless of school closures," Assistant Superintendent Beth Brockman said during the meeting. "Our goal [with this resolution] is around employee retention and keeping our employees that depend heavily on the work day-to-day for their paychecks."

Brockman said the resolution was not expected to have any effect on the district's budget as PISD was "already committed" to paying those employees' wages. Trustee Cody Weaver expressed support of the resolution.

"Anything we can do, within reason, to make sure our staff is compensated and not hurt by something outside of their control and our control, I think we have a responsibility to do," he said.
