Plano school officials are hoping to avoid hiring personnel and splitting up classrooms because of an excess of students at Andrews Elementary School—one too many students, that is. The first-grade class at Andrews stands at a single child over its required ratio of 22 students per teacher, prompting Plano ISD trustees on Tuesday to approve an application to the Texas Education Agency requesting a waiver to the policy. "Given the late point we are in the school year, we’re recommending applying [to the agency] for a waiver rather than hiring a new teacher," Assistant Superintendent for Campus Services Susan Modisette told trustees before the vote. If the waiver is not granted, the school would be required to hire a new teacher and uproot some of its first-graders from their existing classes before the end of the school year. In other business at Tuesday's work session, trustees denied a district employee's complaint appeal and authorized district staff to begin the application process for a primary-years academy program at Huffman Elementary School.
