Two zoning cases were recommended for approval that would allow for the expansion of existing data centers in Plano.

The Plano Planning and Zoning Commission gave its recommendation for approval for one specific-use permit and two preliminary site plans during its Feb. 5 meeting.

The overview

One case was consideration of a specific-use permit to allow the development of a more than 450,000-square-foot data center to be operated by Aligned Data Centers. The Dallas-based company currently operates two data centers in Plano along Summit Avenue, but the new facility would be located near North Star Road and East Plano Parkway.

Along with the new building, Aligned Data Centers sought to construct an electrical substation on site for the data center, according to city documents.

The second case pertained to the addition of a building with over 267,000 square feet to Databank Inc.’s Plano campus located at 8735 Dominion Parkway, per city documents. A Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing for the expansion includes an estimated cost of $280 million.

What’s next?

The Aligned Data Centers case will likely be considered by Plano City Council during its Feb. 26 meeting. As a condition of approval for the preliminary site plan, the specific use permit for the electrical substation must be approved.

Final site plans will be considered by the planning and zoning commission at a later date.
