As the weather calms following a series of Sunday storms with high-speed winds, the lingering fog and precipitation is still affecting local events in Plano.

Here's what you need to know this week:

MLK walk canceled

A walk celebrating civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. has been canceled because of foggy weather, Plano police announced Monday morning.

Event organizers had planned for the walk to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Hobby Lobby parking lot off 15th Street. The walk would have ended at McCall Plaza in downtown Plano, and the event was slated to wrap up by noon.

Police had planned to close off the eastbound lanes of 15th Street along the route, reopening each intersection after walkers passed by. Instead, the walk was canceled on the low-visibility roadways.

Mayor to deliver 'state of the city'

Mayor Harry LaRosiliere this week will discuss the city of Plano's year to come as several developments are slated for completion, including Toyota Motor North America's headquarters.

The annual "state of the city" address is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Courtyard Theater, 1509 H Ave. in downtown Plano. The event will be free and open to the public.

In a newsletter to Plano residents, LaRosiliere said the address will serve as an opportunity for residents to learn about city leaders' plans for the new year and meet with city staff from police, fire, parks and other departments.

"Council and I will highlight our successes from the past year and will provide insight on the year ahead," LaRosiliere said in the newsletter. "We have mapped out a plan to remain a desirable community and economic leader."

Recycling services resume

In case you missed the news, recycling services have resumed in Plano after a fire engulfed a Republic Services drop-off site late last month, temporarily suspending service.

The city announced the renewal of service on Wednesday, putting an end to a nearly two-week period in which Plano residents were advised to set out their recycling as usual, where the material would be collected and then deposited in a landfill.

The city announced in a statement that Republic Services would process the city's recycling at a temporary site until it arranges a permanent solution.
