Black Friday is known for drawing crowds of eager shoppers to big-box stores, but smaller shops use Small Business Saturday to promote the idea of supporting local retailers and keeping holiday spending in the community.

Small Business Saturday takes place the Saturday after Thanksgiving and was started by American Express in 2010 to draw attention to small and family-owned businesses on the busiest shopping weekend of the year, said Small Business Saturday spokeswomen Nicole Reyhle.

Last year, the event generated $16.2 billion dollars in retail sales nationwide, up from $14.3 billion in 2015, she said.

Plano Cycling & Fitness, 605 18^th St., Plano, will observe the holiday with a variety of sales including buy one get one 50 percent off on clothing, buy one get one free on tires, 10 percent off footwear and discounts on 2016 bikes. On Saturday, Plano Cycling & Fitness will be open from 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m.

Shoppers will also find 300 vendors selling a variety of items from antiques and collectibles to furniture and glassware at High Street Antiques & Design, 800 N. Central Expressway, Plano. Vendors will be hosting their own sales, which will range from 15-50 percent off. The antique store will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.

The Uber Shop, 6905 K Ave., Ste. 204, Plano, is also participating in Small Business Saturday with 20 percent off all women’s clothing and accessories, a selection of men’s scarves for $8, selection of men and women sweaters for $7 and kids beanies for $3. Additional sales can be found in store on Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Bricks & Minifigs will offer 10 percent off all purchases for Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26.[/caption]

According to Bricks & Minifigs’ Facebook page, the LEGO store will offer 10 percent off entire purchases to celebrate Small Business Saturday. Bricks & Minifigs will be open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Saturday.

Businesses that participate in Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26 can receive promotional materials from American Express. Businesses do not have to accept American Express credit cards to use the posters, signs and other promotional items. Businesses are also using several social media hashtags for the event, including #shopsmall.
