A preliminary site plan filed by Plano ISD has cleared the planning and zoning commission.

Commissioners voted to approve the plan, which covers the $48.5 million renovation project at Plano East Senior High School, at an Oct. 7 meeting.

The big picture

Several changes funded through the district’s 2022 bond are planned at Plano East Senior High School, including:
  • Two additional gyms
  • Several athletic facility improvements
  • Turf replacement at the baseball and softball fields
  • Building renovations to heating, ventilation and air conditioning, restrooms and more
  • Relocation of the tennis courts
Residents spoke at the meeting, citing concerns about noise because of the proximity of the new tennis courts to nearby homes, potential light pollution from the pole lighting and additional traffic because of reduced parking.

What’s next?

According to city documents, PISD must get approval from the city’s board of adjustment for both the reduced setback between the tennis courts and nearby residences, and the reduction in on-site parking at the school. Approval of the preliminary site plan by the planning and zoning commission is contingent on approval from the board of adjustment.

Variance requests for the amended parking and tennis court setbacks must be filed with the city and considered by the board of adjustment at a future meeting. If the board of adjustment denies the variance requests, PISD will have to refile a preliminary site plan with the city, per city documents.

Construction is planned to start in November, according to a bond project update shared earlier this year.
