A preliminary site plan for Plano West Senior High School, which outlines an updated layout for the property, received approval from the planning and zoning commission.

Commissioners approved the preliminary site plan, which is contingent upon approval of a reduced parking minimum and a variance waiving the required 150-foot hose lay from the fire department, during the Oct. 21 meeting.

The overview

Proposed renovations included as part of a $83.4 million project funded by the 2022 bond include a new structure for automotive classes, a two-story expansion of the gym and a two-story addition to connect two buildings on campus. According to city documents, the on-site tennis courts will be removed and relocated to an adjacent property.

With approval of the preliminary site plan, Plano ISD can apply for two variances for reduced parking on the campus and the hose lay requirement, per city documents.

Looking ahead

If the variance requests are approved, there is no further action for the preliminary site plan. However, if either or both of the variances are denied by the board of adjustment, Plano ISD will be required to file an updated preliminary site plan.

Renovations on the campus are expected to be completed in 2026. Individuals interested in following the progress of PISD bond projects can use the district’s website.
