McKinney ISD officials OK $6.5M investment in safety, security upgrades

The district’s board of trustees approved a $6.55 million purchase of physical security upgrades through Verkada with bond funds. Verkada is an integrated security platform system that will replace security cameras, door access control and other physical safety measures across campuses. Its video analytics will reduce the time it takes to investigate incidents.

McKinney ISD officials approve 3% raise for teachers, staff in 2024-25 school year

The compensation increase was approved by the district’s board of trustees May 13. Employees, including teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians and other eligible positions, will receive 3% raises for the 2024-25 school year. The cost of the raise for the district is $5.64 million. The salary for a starting teacher is $62,100—a 2.7% increase from the starting salary of $60,450 in the 2023-24 school year.


McKinney ISD officials OK $392.82M budget with $21.79M potential shortfall

McKinney ISD officials are expecting to dip into the district's reserve general fund to balance the fiscal year 2024-25 budget. The budget was approved by the board of trustees June 24 in a 6-1 vote, with trustee Chad Green voting against approval.

McKinney ISD approves slight decrease for FY 2024-25 tax rate

The total rate approved by the board is $1.1252 per $100 valuation, a $0.0023 decrease from FY 2023-24’s rate of $1.1275 per $100 valuation.

McKinney ISD officials form committee to address, maximize district facility needs


The district’s board of trustees approved a resolution to create the Long Range Facility Planning Committee during an Aug. 26 meeting. The committee will plan how to utilize MISD’s facilities to maximize their potential and then provide recommendations on facility use for the next 20 years to district leadership.

Jennifer Akins aims to support McKinney ISD’s strategic plan through new role

Akins started with McKinney ISD in 2000 as a teacher, teaching high school English and special education. After six years of teaching, Akins became a school counselor, a position she held for 10 years before transitioning into the district’s first ever director of counseling. In April 2024, she moved into her current position as chief school improvement and federal programs officer.

McKinney ISD officials are working to maintain its teacher workforce while facing a competitive job market and budget constraints. The district has focused some of its hiring efforts on recruiting substitutes and former students while also participating in college job fairs.

The number of teachers leaving McKinney ISD slowed down in the 2023-24 school year, according to data presented by the district. The district saw a 2% decrease in its attrition rate for the 2023-24 school year.

McKinney ISD receives ‘A’ for financial integrity from Texas Education Agency


McKinney ISD earned a “superior” rating of its financial integrity during the 2022-23 school year. The Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas, also called FIRST, is issued by the Texas Education Agency, and provides accountability for Texas public schools.
