Company officials confirmed the planned closure of a Kroger store in central McKinney, located at the intersection of Lake Forest Drive and Eldorado Parkway.

The specifics

An exact closing date has not been announced by company officials, but staff at the store said the location is expected to close in early March. The store offers a variety of grocery products including fresh produce, frozen meals and canned foods, as well as household supplies, pharmaceutical items and more.

The closure is part of a larger company-wide initiative to improve efficiency and the company’s long-term financial health, company representative John Votava said. Employees at the store will be offered transfers to neighboring stores, he said.

“We apologize for any inconvenience this closure may cause and we hope to see you in our neighboring stores,” Votava said in an email.

Other nearby Kroger stores include:
  • 1801 N. Lake Forest Drive, McKinney
  • 12221 Custer Road, Frisco
The context

The closure comes less than a year after a Kroger store in East McKinney was included in a company-wide, 60-store closure. Following the closure of the central McKinney store, some other nearby grocery stores include Walmart, Market Street, Tom Thumb and H-E-B.

Also of note

Kroger officials are expected to break ground on a new McKinney-area Kroger store in late January, Votava said. While company officials have not announced the new store’s location, David Palmer, executive vice president with retail real estate services firm Weitzman, confirmed a Kroger Marketplace store is planned for west McKinney.

The planned 99,000-square-foot store will serve as the anchor tenant for Custer Frontier Marketplace, a commercial development at the southeast corner of North Custer Road and Laud Howell Parkway.
