Two board of trustees positions are on the May 3 ballot in NISD for Places 3 and 4.

The details

The filing period closed at 5 p.m. Feb. 14, and without any opposition filed against her, Judy Copp will serve another term as the Place 4 trustee.

The race for Place 3 has two candidates. Incumbent Anne Simpson has served on the board since 2013 and is not seeking reelection. Jeff Dearing and Joe Washam will face off for the Place 3 trustee position during the May 3 election.

Dearing is a resident of Roanoke and Washam lives in Justin.

What the candidates are facing

School districts across the state face a funding crisis brought on by state funding that hasn’t increased since 2019.

NISD voters denied a voter approved tax rate election in November that would have generated funds to cover the district’s $16 million shortfall for the 2025-26 school year.

NISD officials have already eliminated more than 100 teaching positions to help the district, which is one of the fastest growing in the state, balance its budget.

Further cuts, including non-payroll deductions, were discussed at the board of trustees regular meeting Feb. 10.
