It will cost Keller ISD approximately $12,000 more for school resource officers this academic school year.

In a nutshell

During their Oct. 23 regular meeting, school board members approved the renewal of an interlocal agreement between KISD and the city of Fort Worth to provide 12 school resource officers for the 2023-24 academic year. According to district documents, the total cost to the district will be $1.33 million, which represents a $12,360 increase from the 2022-23 school year.

District documents state KISD contracts with the city of Fort Worth to provide school resource officers at eight of the Keller ISD campuses within Fort Worth city limits.

The breakdown is as follows:

The 12th school resource officer will provide security protection at all of the district’s elementary schools, Director of Safety and Security Michael Hoffman said.

The context

Earlier this year, the Legislature passed House Bill 3, which states all public and open-enrollment charter schools must have at least one armed security officer on campus during regular school hours.

These individuals can include:
  • A law enforcement officer
  • A school marshal
  • A teacher licensed to carry a handgun
According to state documents, each district will receive $15,000 per campus and $10 per student for school safety initiatives.

Quote of note

“Given the number of campuses we have in the city of Fort Worth and the partnership we have with [the] Fort Worth [Police Department], I think it’s a good testament to the partnership,” Place 4 trustee John Birt said. “We do count on the city of Fort Worth to help keep our kids safe, so I appreciate that.”
