The idea to open a wine bar in Roanoke started out as a joke, Wine:30 on Oak Street co-owner Annett Van Grinsven said.

She said her significant other, Tim Hamilton, suggested in 2020 they buy Roanoke’s Treehouse building and open a wine bar.

“The reason this was what I would call a joke is because we knew the location was not ideal,” she said.

However, Van Grinsven said the concept had merit. The business became a reality in July 2021.

She said they chose the Oak Street location because of the foot traffic from nearby apartments and city hall as well as future plans.

“We feel this will be a prime location once the Peabody Hotel and convention center is completed directly across the street from us,” Van Grinsven said.

She said they have a large selection of Texas wines, wines from other states and international imports.

“In supporting Texas, we offer a handful of locally brewed craft beers, so the nonwine drinker in the group has an option,” she said.

They also have charcuterie boards, made-to-order flatbreads and desserts.

Van Grinsven describes the ambiance as friendly and hospitable.

“I strive to make sure you feel like you are important to me because you are,” she said.

Van Grinsven said a childhood memory triggered the business name.

“I recalled, while I was growing up, men would always say it was beer-thirty—time for a beer—so Wine:30 on Oak Street came about,” she said. “It’s always time for a glass of wine.”
