Southlake City Council awarded a construction contract to add deceleration right-turn lanes on Southlake Boulevard, which the city says is one of its most heavily traveled roadways.

Council awarded the contract June 21 for no more than $917,000 to EARTC LLC to construct the new lanes at the intersections of Byron Nelson and Southridge Lakes parkways.

Traffic is currently being disrupted as vehicles slow to turn right onto Byron Nelson and Southridge Lakes, according to a staff memo to council. The deceleration lanes are warranted due to the increased traffic and the installation of medians on Southlake Boulevard. The work will require relocating existing traffic signals and upgrading pedestrian facilities, according to the memo.

“This project aims to improve the safety, convenience and efficiency of mobility along FM 1709,” the memo stated.

Tarrant County will pay $450,000 of the construction costs as part of the county’s 2006 transportation bond program. The rest will be funded through the city’s capital improvement program.

Work is expected to start in July and take 10-12 months to complete, the memo stated.
