Action on a specific use permit for a church near Frisco Ranch Estates was tabled by the Frisco Planning & Zoning Commission at an April 14 meeting.

The Church in McKinney is requesting the permit to build an L-shaped church over nearly 2 acres on the corner of North County Road and Cottonwood Street.

During the meeting, the project owner said the church would be smaller and not a “typical Texas church.” He said the main sanctuary will be less than 2,000 square feet, and the entire building will be “the size of a large home.”

The project expects to add 28 parking spaces, the owner said.

A divided group of 20 Frisco residents, many of whom live in neighborhoods near the area in question, offered comments over the phone during the April 14 meeting.

Residents who opposed the specific use permit for the church cited concerns about increased traffic on Cottonwood Street.

“If you would see the traffic that our street encounters when there are events, ... you can see our concern for our children and our grandchildren that enjoy this residential area,” said a resident living on Cottonwood Street during public comment. “There is a concern for safety. The street infrastructure cannot hold when there are cars parking on one side of it.”

Commission Chair Robert Cox said tabling the item was necessary as he said there is insufficient information on the project.

“I have some concerns about Cottonwood Street,” he said during the meeting. “I have some concerns about how close the streets are, and I would like to get some more input on that.”

The specific use permit will be revisited at the commission's April 28 meeting; new information will be presented, and a public hearing will continue.
