Harris is running for the seat recently vacated by trustee Katie Patterson. Her opponents include Taler Jefferson, Patricia Price Hicks and Sakennia Reed.

Why did you decide to run for this position?
I am very passionate about RISD—the students, teachers, staff and communities. I have some personal, vested interests in the district. I am a product of RISD, and I have a son who is attending Richardson High School. I [would] also love the opportunity to be able to assist with student success in RISD.
What experience—professional or otherwise—do you have that would prepare you for this position?
I have over 25 years working in corporate America for Coca-Cola and Yum! Brands Pizza Hut. I have served several roles on RISD PTAs' local units, including on the Ways & Means committee, as a membership chairperson and as president. I have also served on the RISD Council of PTAs (as a first vice president aide and as a programs chairperson), as a popcorn kernel and co-den leader for the Circle 10 Cub Scouts, and as a Junior BETA Club sponsor.
If elected, what are some specific policies you would advocate in RISD?
I am on the RISD Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee. This past school year, the committee worked hard to develop an equity policy, which was adopted by the RISD board of trustees. As a trustee, I would advocate for the equity policy along with many [other] policies in RISD.
Are there any specific areas in the district’s budget that you would consider funding more or funding less?
School budgets are very complicated. It is certainly one of the areas that I am researching and educating myself on so I can fairly decide based on Place 4's needs and the district's needs as a whole. In order to accomplish this, I will maintain strong communication with our staff, students and the community to stay informed of their needs. You will always have my pledge that I will work for the best benefits [for] our students, teachers and stakeholders.
What else do you want constituents to know about you and your background?
RISD has been my community for over 30 years. I attended and graduated from RISD, I have a son who is a student at Richardson High School, and I have dedicated countless hours through the PTA as well as to RISD as a parent liaison on several committees. I believe communication and education are key to student success.
