The Place 2 seat is currently held by Jeff Cheney, who will complete his third term in May 2016 and is term limited by the city charter.
Huffman currently serves as the director of governmental affairs for the Frisco Chamber of Commerce.
Shona Huffman is running for Place 2 seat on Frisco City Council.[/caption]"I have always sought ways to serve my community, and Frisco leaders whom I respect and trust have asked me to consider this next step for city council," Huffman said in a news release. "After months of consideration, research and prayer, I am excited to share my decision to offer my experience and abilities to the voters of Frisco."
One of the issues Huffman said is important for Frisco and that she will focus on if elected are procuring ways to help manage the fast growth in Frisco.
"As we are growing, I think it is key that we are very much planning for the future and the best way to manage that growth," she said.
Huffman said other issues she would focus on are making sure the city has a stable financial structure and looking for the right businesses to come to Frisco.
Huffman has helped lead the development of the "Frisco Chamber Votes" website, which brings pro-business election information and local, state and federal advocacy to the community. She has also partnered with Frisco-area organizations that oppose the installation of 12-story electricity transmission lines down Main Street.
Huffman is a 12-year resident of Frisco and a 25-year resident of Denton County. She has a bachelor's degree in multiple disciplines from Southwest Baptist University. She also holds master's degrees in political science and communications. She had a 12-year teaching career teaching history and government at the high school level; and she coached speech and debate teams. As an educator, Huffman was awarded the C-SPAN National Teacher Fellow Award, and spent a summer working in Washington D.C. to help develop a curriculum for C-SPAN in the Classroom.
Candidates have between Jan. 20 and Feb. 19 to file for a place on City Council. Council elections will take place May 7 with early voting beginning Apr. 25.
