FM 423 has a new name in honor of a fallen soldier.
U.S. Army Sgt. Enrique Mondragon was killed on Christmas Eve 2012 in Baraki Barak, Afghanistan when his unit was attacked by small arms fire while on patrol. Mondragon was 23 and a resident of The Colony.
During the past legislative session State Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Frisco, helped pass a bill that would rename FM 423 as the U.S. Army Sergeant Enrique Mondragon Memorial Highway. In June, Gov. Greg Abbott officially signed the bill.

On Oct. 9, Mondragon’s family and friends, including his wife Katie and 5-year-old daughter Beverly, gathered together for a dedication ceremony at a public works facility in The Colony for city leaders to unveil the new highway signs with the new name.
The portion of FM 423 that is renamed stretches through Frisco, Little Elm and The Colony. City leaders from each city were in attendance.
“Evil exists in this world and it’s an unfortunate thing but it is the reality and it’s one we cannot ignore and we must address and we have to have men like Enrique Mondragon to be willing to answer that call,” Fallon said during the ceremony. “And he did answer that call and in doing so tens of thousands of lives have been saved.”
After the unveiling Frisco Mayor Maher Maso took the time thank Fallon for his work in helping passing this bill. City Councilmember Tim Nelson also presented a plaque to Katie Mondragon that had been on display in Painted Post, New York.
After the ceremony Katie Mondragon said the ceremony was a beautiful way to honor her husband.
"It's amazing that Rep. Fallon and all these city leaders took time out of their day to be here and honor [Enrique]," she said. "[Enrique] would be very humbled and he would be very, very honored."
Enrique Mondragon's mother Barbara Martin Del Campo said it was a great feeling to have her son honored in this manner.
"When he was here, he would always tell me how hard he fought for his nation, he wanted to protect us, and he loved what he did," she said. "I'm happy in this moment because I know he is watching over us from heaven."
She said the best way she thinks her son would described this moment is by using his favorite word, "awesome."
